Do you speak cat?

Basil at Longcroft

Did you know that when your cat slow blinks at you, it’s like a kitty kiss?

Blink back slowly and return the kiss!

Which other “secret messages” do our enigmatic feline friends give us?

Ears perked up: I am listening to you!

Tail up: Hello, I am pleased to see you! Have you come to play with me?

Tail up with a hooked end: Hello, I am pleased to see you but I am not quite sure about what is going on here… a little reassurance?

Rubbing his chin and sides at you: This human belongs to me! (What your cat is basically doing is marking his territory with his scent and letting everybody else know that you are his. We take it as a sign of affection!)

Tummy exposed, laid back: No doubt about it: Will.i.am is totally relaxed and trusts you. Don’t make the mistake of rubbing his tummy like a dog’s though! He would much prefer you to give his head a brief stroke.

Ears up and slightly pointing forward: I am ready to investigate what is happening here!

Flattended body, flattened ears, licking lips: I am stressed and scared, leave me alone!

Unfortunately we can’t find a picture exhibiting this behaviour, as all of our guests enjoy their stay with us so much!

Our friends at Cats Protection have created a video guide to cat behaviour – after a study found many owners struggle to understand their pet. Animal lovers are often at a loss to explain why their cat extends its tail upwards, lies on its back, rubs against them, or even purrs.

Do you speak cat perfectly, or did you learn anything new?
